Local campaigner Paul Duffy has been chosen as the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming Runcorn and Helsby by-election. This election is anticipated following the resignation of Labour MP Mike Amesbury, who stepped down after his recent conviction for common assault.
Paul Duffy, who previously stood as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, has committed to addressing key local concerns, such as the cost of living crisis, social care, and crime. The by-election is expected to take place in May, although the official date has yet to be announced.
Upon his selection, Paul Duffy said:
“This is a really exciting opportunity to provide an alternative to the two main parties and to Reform’s media circus. I’m proud to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat for Runcorn and Helsby and I’m ready to get stuck in delivering for residents.
“We have a golden opportunity to champion the issues that matter most to people; the cost of living, social care, and crime. I’ve got a proven track record of fighting for residents and I’ll continue to fight for the people of Runcorn and Helsby through this election and beyond.
“Whether it’s the Chancellor’s damaging jobs tax, or the crisis in social care, I’m ready to hold this Government to account, to demand better, and to deliver real change to Runcorn and Helsby.”
Duffy aims to provide a strong, local alternative voice, highlighting his previous experience and deep understanding of the issues affecting the constituency. His campaign will focus on practical solutions and holding the government accountable to ensure better outcomes for local residents.
The Liberal Democrats stand for building a fairer society, promoting social justice, improving public services, and protecting civil liberties. They aim to address inequalities through pragmatic and community-focused solutions, which makes their voice particularly important in this by-election. Paul Duffy’s candidacy offers voters the chance to support policies centred around fairness, transparency, and real improvements to everyday life, providing a clear alternative to traditional party politics in Runcorn and Helsby.
